Curriculum Area: Math and Social Studies

Grade Level: Intermediate - 5th grade

Length of Webquest: 2-4 weeks

Purpose: To allow students to practice using skills related to scheduling a vacation: tracking money spent, elapsed and estimating time, map skills, and learning about our nation's capitol. This also will allow students to practice using the Internet as a research tool, using Microsoft Word or Excel, and Power Point.

Core Content for Mathematics Assessment

MA-E-1.1.2                 The operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division

MA-E-2.2.6     Use standard units to measure volume of rectangular prisms, liquid capacity,  money, time, and temperature (e.g., above and below zero)

Core Content for Social Studies Assessment  

SS-E-4.1.1       Simple physical, political, and thematic maps, globes, charts, photographs, aerial photography, and graphs can be used to find and explain locations and display information.

  Number and Operations Standard for Grades 3-5

Compute fluently and make reasonable estimates

 -develop fluency in adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing whole numbers;

-use visual models, benchmarks, and equivalent forms to add and subtract commonly used fractions and decimals;

-select appropriate methods and tools for computing with whole numbers from among mental computation, estimation, calculators, and paper and pencil according to the context and nature of the computation and use the selected method or tools.

 

Measurement Standard for Grades 3–5

  Apply appropriate techniques, tools, and formulas to determine measurements

-select and apply appropriate standard units and tools to measure length, area, volume, weight, time, temperature, and the size of angles;

 

Problem Solving Standard for Grades 3-5

Instructional programs from prekindergarten through grade 12 should enable all students to—

               - build new mathematical knowledge through problem solving;

               - solve problems that arise in mathematics and in other contexts;

               - apply and adapt a variety of appropriate strategies to solve problems;

               - monitor and reflect on the process of mathematical problem solving.
