Introduction:  Lucky you!! You and your family are going to Washington DC this summer. Our nation's capitol has a lot to offer, museums, monuments, loads of historic sites, and of course, the White House. It's up to you and your siblings to select which things you must see. You need to create a schedule and predict your spending. Your parents say you  must stay within a budget of $200 for your sightseeing trips. Keep in mind, for this trip to be a pleasant one, everyone's preferences should be kept in mind. Have fun planning!!!

Task:  Now let the fun begin! You and your siblings must create a schedule of what you will visit on a three day tour of our nation's capitol. You can start touring on Monday morning at 10:00 am and you have to be back to the airport at 7:00 pm on Wednesday to catch your flight home. You must create an itinerary tracking the amount of money it will cost to enter the places your family wants to go and the time estimates for each place. Work hard, your parents are known for rewarding you when you cooperate with your siblings! Your final product should be a Power Point presentation describing your trip to your classmates.

Process:

  1. Each person in your group must choose one of the siblings to be. Click on the face to see your options:

2. Go to the picture that matches your character. At these sites you will find a list of resources that will help you explore your section of Washington DC. As you are exploring your sites, jot down things like: where you want to go, how much it costs to get in, how much time you think you will need to spend there, and specific things you want to see. Also, keep in mind what your siblings are looking for. If you find any sites to visit that you think they might enjoy, jot it down and let them know!

  3. As a group, share what you have learned so far. Each of you should present at least 2 ideas each. Make a rough outline of where you will go on Day 1, Day 2, and Day 3.

  4. Begin to create your itinerary starting on Monday. (Click on the word itinerary if you are unsure as to what one should look like.) List your estimated times and where you will go once you reach DC. Also keep a running tab of the cost involved. You will need to make a final version using either Microsoft Word or Excel.

5. COOL NEWS!!! Your parents have seen what a great job you are doing so far and have decided to treat you to dinner at Planet Hollywood! However, they are so un-cool that they aren't really sure if there is one in DC. It's your job to check it out. Find out if there is one, where it's located, and figure out what day it would be best (based on it's location) to have dinner there. They also said you each get $20 to buy a souvenir. Look at this site to find all the info you need!

Planet Hollywood

Make sure you include this information on your itinerary and your Power Point presentation, also be sure that on your Power Point  you include what each of you are going to buy and a picture if possible.

6. Print out 3 copies of the map at this site. Highlight the places you will go, one map for each day.  Check to make sure that you are not trying to cover too much distance in one day and that you are not backtracking. Indicate where you will start, go next, and where you will finish for the day. If you find anything that looks like it might not work, take the time to go back and review to make the necessary changes.

DC Map

7. Begin work on your Power Point presentation. You must have at least 15 slides detailing where you will go and how much it will cost, you should include pictures of what you will be seeing, remember you cannot spend over $200 on touring.

8. When you are finished, look at the scoring guide below to see if there is anything that your group forgot. Remember, you are shooting for all 4's!

9. Read the conclusion, as a group prepare an answer for the final question.

Conclusion:

So you did it, you planned a family vacation to our nation's capitol. Think about all the skills you had to use to plan this vacation, you had to be able to estimate how long it would take to see your sites, keep track of the time spent at each site and make sure that you are able to see everything you wanted to on each day, keep track of the money it would cost to get into each site, add the total amount and subtract from the $200 limit, map out the order of the sites you wanted to see on each day, and finally use Power Point to present your trip to your classmates. Who knew that planning a vacation involved so many skills that you are learning in school ?!?! Can you think of any other skills you had to use that I didn't mention? Think hard, because I 'll be asking your team when you do your presentation.
