Pyramid Cafe Characters

Introduction

How many times have you complained about the cafeteria’s food?  Now is your chance to have a say in what is served.  The cafeteria workers have gone on strike.  Your group is now in charge of planning the menu for the week.  Don’t get too excited, there is going to be some work involved in your planning.

Every lunch meal that you plan must be 500 or less calories!   Another problem is that you are not allowed to cook so you must order the food in from different fast food restaurants.

---

Task

As a group you must do the following:

*   work together cooperatively and equally

*   follow the daily schedule for which restaurant you will order

*   produce a five day lunch menu that is under 500 calories daily

*   write your lunch menu up on a chart paper and list the calories for each choice

*   after completing the menu use your food pyramid chart to figure out what foods and how many serving of each you must still eat each day

*   share your findings with the class

*   journal entry on how often you feel you eat within the food pyramid guidelines

Process

Each of you has been assigned to a group of 5 students, numbered 1-5.

1.      You are in charge of Monday Pizza Hut

2.      You are in charge of Tuesday Subway

3.      You are in charge of Wednesday McDonald’s

4.      You are in charge of Thursday Kentucky Fried Chicken

5.    You are in charge of Friday Papa John’s

Use the following websites to help you find useful information about the menu items at these restaurants:

http://www.olen.com/food/book.html

http://www.sfsu.edu/~shs/dpm/fast.htm

http://ivillage.com/diet/experts/askdiet/articles/0,5050,2211776_220084,00.html

http://www.kenkuhl.com/fastfood/

**All of these sites contain information about the menu choices and calories.  You should be able to do each day, keep trying all of the sites and mixing the choices up!

Now that you have made your menu you need to display it on chart paper.  Use markers and make it colorful.  After you have completed your menu you are ready to use the food pyramid guide.  Use your personal food pyramid and see what foods (and how many servings of each) you will still need to eat on your assigned day to be within the guidelines.  Add this information to the chart.  Were you surprised?  Now you are ready to do a journal entry.  It needs to be at least one page long.  Write about how often you think you eat within the guidelines of the food pyramid?  What things make it easy and hard to do so?  Were the choices you made for the menu the ones that you would have made if you ate at the restaurant? Why or why not?

Final activity, share the posters and information with the class.

Conclusion

I hope you have learned how to improve your eating styles today.  Hopefully the next time you are getting fast food you will think about the amount of calories in the food items you are choosing and go with one of the lighter choices we learned about today.  Also, I hope that you will try to use the food pyramid guidelines in your every day lives and try to find ways to get all of the food groups in everyday. Another thing that I helped this lesson helped you to see are all of the resources that are available to you on the internet!  You can research and find out a great deal of information.
