What if there was no such thing as candy? What if there were no
more potato chips, french fries or ice cream? Our only choices of what to
eat would have to be healthy food. Would you be able to plan a meal
with only healthy food as your choices?
The class is going for a picnic at the park. Your team's job is
to plan a healthy lunch menu for the class.

Each team will have three members. Pick from the choices below the job
that you can do to help the team.
Researcher - You will
guide the team in finding and reading the information.
Record Keeper - You will write
down the information for the group to use later.
Editor - You will check the
information and final product for your group.
Even though you have jobs, teams will work together to plan a healthy
meal to take on the class picnic. You will design and illustrate a
menu showing the meal you have chosen.

1. Begin by researching healthy foods found on the Food Guide
Pyramid. Use the information you find to complete the pyramid
worksheet prepared earlier in class. Include the names of the food
groups in their correct spot on the pyramid as well as examples of food
from each group.
Click on the picture to begin your search.
2. Let's play Monster Nutrition! In this
game you will feed the monster foods you would find on the Food Guide
Pyramid. Items will come by on a belt and you need to use the mouse
to double click only food items into the monster's mouth. Once the
food gets in his mouth you may need to click on 'keep playing' to continue
the game. Each player can shoot four different food items into his
mouth.

3. Go back to your food pyramid worksheet and be sure you have
completed all levels of the pyramid and have examples in each one.
Your team has completed the research portion of the assignment.
The rest of the work will be done at the art center.
4. Work as a team to decide on a healthy menu for our class
picnic lunch.
5. Make a list of the food and drink items you would like to
include in the meal.
6. Using the items in the art center design and illustrate a menu
to show the class what you have planned for the picnic. There are
some sample menus to look at in the art center before you begin your work.
Don't forget to be creative and have fun!

Students will be graded on both items produced during the activity.
Each student food guide pyramid will be graded as well as a group grade
for the menu designed.

Food Guide Pyramid |
My Pyramid only had a few of the
food groups labeled with examples of each. I had trouble reading
what I wrote when I needed it later. |
My pyramid had
most of the food
groups labeled with some examples but my writing could have been neater. |
I included all of the food groups
and had several examples in each group. I wrote neatly so
I could use the pyramid information later. |

Congratulations! You have learned the basic food groups and the
kinds of food that goes in each group. You have also learned how to
plan a healthy meal that includes each of the food groups.
This information can be used to plan other meals as well.
Maybe you could help Mom at home to plan a healthy dinner for your family.
You could also show your family what you know by planning your lunches to
bring to school.
Great Job!!!!
