Help! The Jolly
Postman is busy delivering his letters, and all of this work is making him
hungry. What can we do to help?
Back to top of page
Your goal is to plan a
healthy meal for the Jolly Postman to help keep his energy up to finish
his route. He has lots of important letters to deliver today!
You are going to work in groups to create a delicious nutritious meal using foods from all 5 of the food
groups. Remember you need to include fruits and vegetables, breads
or other grains, meat, chicken, or fish, good dairy foods and a small bit from the sweets
group.

Are you ready to create a great meal to help keep the
Jolly Postman healthy? Follow the directions
below to get started. Happy eating!

Step #1 You will be
working in groups of 4 and each of you will have a very important
job! You are each going to become an expert on one of the 5 food
groups. Keep reading to see what to do next.
Produce Manager: Your
job is to learn everything you can about fruits and vegetables. We
want to make sure that the Jolly Postman gets in his daily servings of
this important food group. What fruits and vegetables are you going
to serve the Jolly Postman? Remember he only needs 1 or 2 servings
of fruit in a meal and 1-3 servings of vegetables in a meal.
Baker: Your job is to
learn everything you can about breads and other grains. We
want to make sure that the Jolly Postman gets in his daily servings of
this important food group. What breads or other grains are you going
to serve the Jolly Postman? Remember this is the biggest food group
and the Jolly Postman needs 3 or 4 servings in his meal.
Butcher: Your job is
to learn everything you can about different kinds of meats and
proteins. We want to make sure that the Jolly Postman gets in his
daily servings of this important food group. What foods from the
meat group are you going to serve the Jolly Postman? Remember, you
should only include 1 serving of meat for his meal!
Confectioner & Milk
Man: Your job is to learn everything you can about sweets and the
dairy group! Does the Jolly Postman need a lot of sweets to keep him
healthy? Create a yummy dessert to serve the Jolly Postman.
Can a dessert taste good and still be healthy? What sorts of dairy
foods could you serve to the Jolly Postman? You should include 1-3
servings of dairy foods for his meal. Remember you have to
look at 2 food groups so get busy!
Step #2 How are you going
to decide who will take each role? I think it's you!!! If you
don't remember how to play "I think it's you!" ask Mrs. Hurley, your
teacher, or a friend for
help.
Step #3 Click on the blue
words below that go with your job to find out where you are going to
go on the internet to get started!

Step #4 On your job
sheet, write down or draw a picture of what you would like to serve the
Jolly Postman. Hold on to your paper because we'll use it more
later! Remember you only need to write down the foods you are going
to serve from your food group. Your partners will add foods
from the rest of the food groups.
Step #5 Use Mrs.
Hurley's magazines to find pictures of the foods you chose or draw your
own picture of your choices using any kind of paper you like or other
materials around the room. Make sure you only get pictures of the
foods you wrote down on your job sheet and make it neat. Remember, eating too much
can make you sick--even if you're eating healthy foods. We don't
want the Jolly Postman to be so stuffed from over-eating that he can't
continue to deliver his letters.
Step #6 Once your whole
group has finished their work, get a copy of your group's food pyramid and
glue your pictures onto the area that goes with your food group.
Be careful when you
glue! You only need a dot or two.
Step #7 When your group
has finished creating your food pyramid that shows the healthy foods you
are going to feed the Jolly Postman, turn it in to Mrs. Hurley. Then
you can look at some of the neat links below under Resources to learn even more about good
nutrition and ways to stay healthy! If there aren't any computers
available, that's ok! You can get a pillow from the reading corner
and read a book about nutrition or go to the Writing Center to write a
letter to the Jolly Postman thanking him for coming to lunch. Did he
enjoy his meal? You could also illustrate a picture of the Jolly
Postman eating his delicious nutritious lunch! Perhaps you could
even write a letter to one of the other characters from the story.
What would you like to tell them? You may choose what you would like
to do, but remember you need to be thinking about good nutrition.
Work quietly until the rest of your classmates are finished!

Resources
There
are lots of games and activities you can play below. If you need
help with reading the directions, ask Mrs. Hurley, your teacher, or a
friend for help.

Grab
a Grape will give you the answer to a question about good nutrition, but
can you pick the right question? Check 4 boxes of games you'd like
to play and then click "Let's Play". Pick either 1, 2, or 3 then the
answer will come up on the side, and you just pick the choice that goes
with the answer.

Go to the Dole 5 A Day site to learn even more
about the importance about eating at least 5 servings of fruits a day.
There are lots of neat links, so get clicking!
This is a fun site where you can play lots of
neat games about good nutrition. Click on the name of the game you'd
like to play then follow the directions on the screen. My favorite
is Mission Nutrition. Ask Mrs. Hurley, your teacher, or a friend if
you need help.
