NEWS AND EVENTS

April 25: Our pie contest winners (Dr. Russell, Dr. Edwards, and Dr. Oliver) were rewarded yesterday at our last meeting of the term. The pie contest fundraiser brought in nearly $1400 to NKU SAACS/GSE. Thanks to all that participated! In case you missed it, here's a video...

October 2: As we've discussed in lecture, SAACS/GSE will be doing a human periodic table at noon on Monday, October 23. People will gather on the lawn north of the science center and hold element signs to create a huge periodic table. Photographs will be taken from the science center roof, and we'll hopefully get the picture in the local media. A light lunch of some sort will be provided, and you might be able to earn extra credit in your chemistry classes if you participate (check with your chemistry instructor for more details) If you're interested in participating, go to this website and sign up:

September 28: In preparation for upcoming CHE 100-level exams, SAACS is offering three tutoring sessions: Mon. 10/02/06 6pm-8pm; Tues. 10/03/06 6pm-8pm; and Mon. 10/09/06 2pm-4pm. All three of these sessions will be held in the Chemistry Lounge on the 4th floor of the Science Center (SC 401). These sessions are open to all students in a CHE 100-level class.  Anyone in these classes can feel free to stop by anytime during the session for help relating to their chemistry lecture/lab.  All of these tutoring sessions will be free, and your attendance will not be reported to your instructors (unless it is by you).  We might even have some free food! We also need tutors to help with these sessions.  So if you have been through General Chemistry I & II, please sign up for one of these times.  Tutors that sign up and show up will be entered into a drawing for a prize (T-shirt, Gift Certificate, or something else -- TBD).  The sign-up sheet is posted on the white board in SC 401 (the 4th floor Chemistry Lounge).  Even if all of the slots are full for a particular time, feel free to come and pass on your knowledge to those in need.

September 28: Next Wednesday (10/4/06) SAACS is sponsoring a seminar to be held in SC 402 at noon.  Our guest is Dr. William Jensen from the University of Cincinnati entitled "Two Centuries of the Chemistry Set".  This seminar sounds like a detour from our "normal" presentations, and should prove quite interesting.  More information about Dr. Jensen can be found on his website: August 22, 2007r.asp?URL=http://www.che.uc.edu/fac_staff/jensen.html" target=_blank>http://www.che.uc.edu/fac_staff/jensen.htmlThere will be a "meet and greet" social hour (free food!), in SC 300 at 11am (just prior to the seminar) where students will have an opportunity to interact with Dr. Jensen on an informal level.  Anyone who is interested in grad. school, especially at UC,  should consider speaking with Dr. Jensen.  These is an informal session, and our guest is very interested in meeting with students.   Even if you're not sure if grad school is in your future or not, stop by, say hi, and enjoy some free food!

September 14 : Next Wednesday (9/20/06) will mark the first SAACS seminar of  the term.  The seminar will be held in SC 402 at noon.  Our guest is Dr. William Connick from the University of Cincinnati.  The abstract for his presentation can be found below. Dr. Connick also has a recent NKU chemistry graduate (Amber Shiveley) as a group member!  More information about his research can be found on his website: http://www.che.uc.edu/connick_group/website/index.htm
There will be a "meet and greet" social hour in SC 300 at 11am (just prior to the seminar), where students will have an opportunity to interact with Dr. Connick on an informal level.  Anyone who is interested in grad. school, especially at UC, or who is just interested in his work, or should consider speaking with Dr. Connick.  I should emphasize that this is informal, and that Dr. Connick is very interested in meeting with students.   Even if you're not sure if grad school is in your future or not, stop by, say hi, and have a cookie.

August 31: The next SAACS/GSE meeting will be on Wednesday, September 6 from 12-1 in SC 402. The topic of this meeting will be a roundtable discussion about graduate school. If you are considering attending graduate school in chemistry (or anoher science), make sure you attend so you can pick the brains of our faculty. Lunch will be provided (another excellent reason to come). Hope to see you there!

August 21: The first SAACS business meeting will be Wednesday, August 23 from 12-1PM in SC 402. Come meet other SAACS members/officers and discuss upcoming events. We'll also have a breakfast meeting celebrating the end of the first week of classes on Friday, August 25 from 7-9AM in SC 401 (chemistry student lounge). Hope to see you there!
