Below are some of the programs/activities that ASU has
participated in during the 2002-2003 year.

- ASU Second Annual Cultural Fest:
It took ASU members at least 2 months planning,
preparing, and organizing to pull of this very
successful event. Highlights of the Cultural
Fest included African & Caribbean dances, singing and
drumming, a play, a fashion show, the display and sale
of artifacts, rituals and more. All the
performances were done by ASU members. The ASU

- Welcoming
Party: ASU organized and funded a welcoming
Spring party for new international students at the
Hampton Farms Apartments.
|
- UNV-101
Presentations: ASU members made guest
appearances in UNV-101 classrooms, giving
presentations with the purposes of encouraging
students to become involved on campus, as well as
talking to prospective African Student Union members.
Current members have also been invited to give
presentations about the different African cultures, as
well as the general way of life in their respective
countries.
|
- FRESHFUSION:
ASU helped with FRESHFUSION in the form of setting up
displays of their handicrafts and artifacts,
distributing brochures, interacting with students, and
much more.
|
|
|
- 9/11 Memorial
Ceremony: ASU created a banner with the help
of the International
Student Union (ISU) and the
Latino Student Union
(LSU). The banner indicated anti-terrorism
sentiments, and gave condolence to those who lost
their lives during the September 11th attack.
ASU members also carried flags during the memorial
ceremony.
|
- International
Week: ASU performed dances in front of the
University Center plaza, displayed and sold African
clothes, artifacts and handicrafts.
|
- Redwood
Rehabilitation Center: 10 members of ASU
helped with the chores at this center, which serves as
a home for children and adults with disabilities.
The chores included: cleaning, painting, arranging
furniture, and the mopping of floors. ASU
members helped out for nearly 5 hours in support of
the center during its annual Community Care Day in
Fort Mitchell, KY.
|
- STAR Race
Dialogue: ASU co-sponsored the race dialogue
and made a presentation regarding the African area of
concentration and African studies within the African
Americans Studies Curriculum. The American
Studies Curriculum Committee was established to follow
up on the issues and recommendations ASU members made
during the dialogue. So far, letters have been
written to the Chairs of the departments concerned
with this subject. These Chairs all support the
issues and the ASU has yet to submit the
recommendations to President Votruba. The
committee meets to keep each other up-to-date on the
progress of the issues. The President of the ASU
is the Chair of the committee.
|
- Closing the
Gap Dialogue: ASU participated in a dialogue
with the Zeta & Sigmas where discussions regarded the
subjects of: stereotypes each group held about the
other, how to work together, and most importantly, how
to bridge the gap between African and American
Americans. The event was very successful.
|
- Awards &
Scholarships: The Black Faculty and Staff
Association has awarded scholarships to two members of
the African Student Union for their outstanding
academic achievements, as well as helping with issues
regarding diversity and multiculturalism. The
African Student Union has established a new

At least 4 members are to be awarded each year for
their service to the organization.
