NKU SAACS/GSE HISTORY

The Northern Kentucky University's chapter of the Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society (NKU SAACS) was originally established when NKU was known as Northern Kentucky State College, with the chapter charter awarded in 1973.

The goal of SAACS is "...to stimulate the interest of students...in chemistry as a profession and to build up in [their] minds...during their college years a profesison consciousness that will later guide them into organized activity for the advancement of chemistry as a science and a profession." [Committee on the Establishment and Administration of Chapters of Student Affiliates, September 9, 1936, I&EC, News Edition, 358 (1936)].

NKU SAACS is the chemistry club and service organization for the NKU chemistry department.  However, SAACS is not solely for chemistry majors, since biochemistry, biology, and other majors are members.  In 2003, there were 30 active SAACS members (i.e. currently enrolled students).  Interested students are always encouraged to join us!

The NKU chemistry department was honored with a charter to start the Zeta Gamma chapter of the Gamma Sigma Epsilon chemistry honor society in 2005. This organization was founded at Davidson college in 1919 and currently has nearly 40 active chapters found across the country. You can read more about the history of the organization at the GSE website. Pictures from the inagural chemistry celebration banquet and first GSE induction ceremony can be found here.

Members of SAACS/GSE can usually be found in the chemistry student lounge (SC 401). The lounge is always open to all students, so stop by and learn more about us! You can also always contact us to learn more about our organization.
