CHEMISTRY TOOLS

Student lockers are rented by SAACS/GSE. Our lockers are located on the fourth floor of the science center in the hall outside the chemistry lounge (SC 401) and the SC 400 computer lab. Half-height lockers are rented on an annual basis for $x, and full-height lockers are rented on an annual basis for $x. Locks are provided by NKU SAACS/GSE (your own locks are not permitted).  To rent a locker, see the treasurer during a SAACS meeting, Contact SAACS or see Dr. Walters in SC 348.

Visorgogs are safety glasses sold by SAACS/GSE at a cost of $8 each.  These glasses are specially designed to protect from flying particles and at the same time offer protection from glaring overhead lights.  They have a one-piece, impact-resistant, non-fog, non-glare lens and have an attached visor with screen vents for chemical splash protection.  The elastic headband adjusts for any size head, and they can be worn over prescription glasses.  When available, used Visorgogs are available for $6.  SAACS/GSE sells Visorgogs during the first two weeks of each semester in the chemistry labs and the SAACS office (look for scheduled times).  To purchase a pair after the first two weeks, Contact SAACS or see Dr. Walters in SC 348.

Molecular Modeling Kits are sold by SAACS/GSE at a cost of $20 each.  These kits can help students create 3D organic, inorganic, and organometallic structures.  The 118 piece kit is made up of a variety of colors, shapes, and sizes of flexible pieces that snap together.  The kit comes in a plastic case, along with an instruction manual.  Model kits are very helpful to students who have trouble visualizing chirality, symmetry, point groups, or distinguishing between chairs and boats.  We recommend model kits for all Organic and Inorganic students.  To purchase a kit, contact SAACS or see Dr. Russell in SC 350.

CHEMISTRY SOFTWARE

There are several free chemistry tools that are available on the internet.  Some of these tools are fully working free programs while others are restricted demos.  Students are able to download these free resources for academic and personal home use. Besides the tools listed below, there is a wide array of free resources available on the internet. Simply by typing in key words into a search engine, such as Google, it will quickly direct you to endless opportunities.

ISIS/Draw is a free chemistry drawing package that enables you to draw chemical structures using the same intuitive signs and symbols used for paper sketches.  Below is an example of what you can do with ISIS/Draw.

Chime is a chemical structure visualization plug-in for Internet Explorer and Netscape Communicator. After drawing structures with ISIS/Draw, you can visualize them in 2D or 3D.  Below is an example of what Chime can do.  If you right click on your mouse, a menu will come up to allow you to alter the way the DNA molecule is presented.  You will not be able to see the molecule if you don't have Chime installed.

Graphical Analysis is a simple graphing program.  As soon as you type numbers into the data table, they also appear in the graph. When used with a TI Graph Link cable, it can import data from a TI Graphing Calculator. NKU has a site license for Graphical Analysis, so any student can have a copy free of charge.  Graphical Analysis is also used by many chemistry instructors in their lecture and lab courses.  Contact SAACS or your instructor if you'd like a copy.

Logger Pro is a data collection and analysis program. NKU also has a site license for Logger Pro and is used in physical chemistry lab experiments.
